A full Coordinate Measuring Machine calibration can now be accomplished with this single inexpensive piece of equipment. To fully appreciate the achievement of this task you must realize that in every C.M.M. there are 21 potential rigid body errors plus an array of flexural or bending errors that must each be evaluated. This synergistic combination of a Ball Bar with the Ball Plate provides all of the tools required to do a through high quality calibration of the entire C.M.M. system. |
The very light weight of the Geostep ™, twenty pounds, allows a single technician to perform the entire calibration procedure.
The Geostep ™ is machined from a monolithic piece of Stable Cast ™, a very special iron alloy that was developed specifically to give very long term dimensional stability.
The Geostep ™ is one and one half inch (38mm) thick, four inches (102mm) wide and 34 inches (864mm) long.
The ten in line spheres are nineteen millimeter (.748 inch) diameter. They are available in two different materials. The first material is a special micro grain stainless steel that is hardened and subjected to multiple thermal cycles that insure long term dimensional stability. This material has a hardness of 58 HRC minimum. The alternative material is a very high density ceramic. The important feature of this ceramic is that it has the same stiffness as steel so that the calibration is not distorted due to differential elastic deformation.
The Geostep ™ can be placed in all of the 20 to 35 positions specified in the ANSI B89.4.1-1997 standard for "Performance Evaluation of Coordinate Measuring Machines".
The Geostep ™ is supplied with a fully articulating support stand that rigidly couples it directly to the C.M.M. table.
A special kinematically coupled base plate is available, as an accessory, to achieve the very low horizontal positions.
The Geostep ™ can be supplied with one of the rails lapped straight within less than one micrometer (forty microinches).
